Coating opportunities

Coating specialist, Powder Coating HB, have been watching the wood and panel industry with interest lately, currently largely coating aluminium and steel they have been looking at including powder coated MDF to their range. The company which employ seven is one of the largest metal powder coating specialists in Napier. While their clients are mostly local, products coated can end up anywhere from the Coca Cola stand in your local dairy to retail stands in the Australian chain of Coles stores.

Other products include fireplaces, bike frames, aluminium extrusions, joinery and window fittings, sports equipment, pool fences, furniture and garage doors with numbers in any order ranging from one-offs to half dozens to longer runs.

Well aware of the advantage of powder coating over the wet paint process in the metal coating industry, Managing Director Brian Monteith sees the same advantage applicable to MDF. "You get a much harder longer lasting finish which doesn't chip to the same degree and this is the same whatever the substrate," says Brian. "Orica who are our main supplier for metal coating have recently developed the process for coating MDF and I can see its potential, all I really need is a sufficient quantity of work to make it viable."

Brian continues, "there are many areas in cabinetry and panelling that are required to withstand heavy use which would benefit from the more durable surface that powder coating offers and we would welcome the opportunity to provide that service. Perhaps its just a matter of waiting for enough people manufacturing these products to realise the benefits available and the demand will follow."

If you are one of these manufacturers give Brian a call he would be happy to talk opportunities.
